It doesn’t matter whether or not it’s left or right-leaning…

We need real news.

There have been way to many instances where FOX, CNN, NBC, or ABC covers a viral video over an event that’s actually relevant and important to our lives.

I realize the journalism is also a business and that these news companies cater to their audiences interests, but it’s getting to be a bit much.

Media shapes its audiences and we should be encouraging the progression of our society by covering new innovations, policies, leaders, etc. Not cat videos or prank videos for that matter. (Yes, ABC, I’m referring to that one about the man who pretended to rob his girlfriend…and you INTERVIEWED HIM ON TV ABOUT IT. A FIVE MINUTE SEGMENT. WHY.)

Actually right now I think I sound really close-minded. I’m not sure if there are any other aspects to this that I’m missing, but that’s how I feel about the media nowadays.

This is an opinion formed from my own experiences when I was at Brown taking a journalism class. No - I’m not a Brown student. I applied and got accepted there for the summer classes for high school students. Anyway, my professor brought in a woman who survived the Station Nightclub fire and she was telling our class about how CNN had a five minute segment about candles and a two minute segment when they interviewed her about the fire.

My memory’s foggy and there aren’t any details as to whether that segment on candles may actually have been important (hey, maybe it was about safety hazards about candle fragrances), but judging from her anger and what she’s gone through, I think it’s safe enough to say that the CNN segment wasn’t as important as what she had to say.

If there’s anything I’m certain about though, there is no easy solution to this. There are too many other things people need to worry about in their own lives and too many problems in the world that need to be solved.

Maybe I’m wrong. But it sure seems like it when I read the comments on Yahoo articles.

Hey. Some of us are more bored than others.

You know what annoys me? People who try to be too smart.

We know you’re smart. There’s no denying it. But there’s a line to be drawn when you insult the intelligence of others around you.

You do write about whatever you want, but you don’t have to announce it to the whole world. If you think you can answer the question, then by all means answer it. But I don’t care which question you’re answering. I just care about whether or not you understand. I don’t need that extra fluff at the end. It’s an eyesore.

Maybe I’m overreacting, or maybe you’re being a troll, but cut the crap. Seriously? You’re being self-righteous.

There are some things you need to keep to yourself. And I’m not really keeping this to myself, so I guess I need to follow my own advice. But hey - it’s better to keep an open mind and acknowledge areas where you may be wrong.
